Professional Tattoo Aftercare

Proper aftercare is what protects the detail, contrast, and longevity of your tattoo. Black and grey realism especially depends on clean healing. Follow this guide closely and message early if anything looks off.

Immediate Aftercare (First 24 Hours)

Keep the bandage or wrap on for the amount of time instructed at your appointment. Once removed, wash your hands first, then clean the tattoo gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel or let it air dry. Apply only a very thin layer of fragrance-free lotion if instructed.

Daily Aftercare (Days 1–14)

  1. Wash the tattoo 2–3 times daily with lukewarm water and mild fragrance-free soap.
  2. Pat dry gently. Do not rub with a towel.
  3. Apply lotion lightly. The skin should not look overly shiny or greasy.
  4. Wear clean, loose clothing to avoid friction.
  5. Keep bedding, towels, and anything touching the tattoo clean.
  6. Stay hydrated and get proper rest while healing.

Healing Timeline (What’s Normal)

  • Days 1–3: redness, warmth, mild swelling, tenderness
  • Days 4–10: tightness, flaking, peeling, and mild itching
  • Weeks 2–4: surface may look healed, but deeper healing is still happening
  • Weeks 4–8: deeper layers continue settling and final clarity improves

When to Pay Attention

Mild redness, sensitivity, and peeling are normal. Severe swelling, spreading redness, unusual heat, pus, or fever are not. If something looks abnormal, do not guess. Send a clear photo and seek medical care when appropriate.

Do’s & Don’ts

Do’s

  • Use gentle, fragrance-free soap
  • Moisturize lightly with fragrance-free lotion
  • Wear loose, clean clothing
  • Protect the tattoo from friction
  • Message early if something seems off

Don’ts

  • Do not pick, scratch, or peel the tattoo
  • No pools, hot tubs, saunas, baths, or soaking
  • No direct sun exposure while healing
  • Avoid heavy sweating early in healing
  • Do not use numbing cream, ointments, or random products unless approved

Long-Term Care

Once healed, use sunscreen regularly to protect contrast and detail. Sun exposure is one of the fastest ways to fade black and grey realism. Long-term care matters just as much as the initial healing period.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I wash my tattoo?
2–3 times daily is standard. Always wash your hands first, use lukewarm water, and use a mild, fragrance-free soap.
How much lotion should I apply?
A very thin layer. If the tattoo looks glossy, greasy, or wet, you likely used too much.
Is redness or swelling normal?
Mild redness and swelling in the first 48–72 hours can be normal. Severe swelling, spreading redness, unusual heat, pus, or fever are signs to take seriously.
Can I work out?
Light activity is usually fine, but avoid heavy sweating, friction, and pressure on the tattooed area during early healing.
When can I go in the sun?
Avoid direct sun while healing. After healing, use high-SPF sunscreen to protect the tattoo and preserve contrast.
When should I message you?
If you are unsure, message early. Send a clear photo and explain what you are seeing. It is always better to check than assume.
